Ireland will have two participants in the 2019 U.S. Women’s Open at the Country Club of Charleston after both Stephanie Meadow and Leona Maguire came through qualifying yesterday.
Meadow 27, who finished 3rd in 2014 and will play in her 4th US Open in Charleston, finished top of the standings in her qualifier at the Pinnacle Peak Country Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. She shot a wonderful round of 67 – with five birdies and no bogeys – in the opening round, and followed that up with a 71 to finish on 6 under par, three shots clear of fellow qualifier Jimin Khan. Meadow had just one bogey on the day, at the par four tenth hole.
For Maguire 24, it will be her third time to compete in the US Open. She missed the cut in 2016 and 2017. She came through a tense qualifying tournament at the Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia.
Maguire shot in a 10-under-par total to finish one behind Yuka Saso. She carded rounds of 66 and 68, with no bogeys on the card, and it needed to be as Spaniard Fatima Fernandez Cano finished just one stroke behind her after a superb round of 66 saw her just miss out.
The US Open will take place from May 30th through to June 2nd.
