Haley looks for Sale to push-on in Europe

Sale Sharks full-back Mike Haley says his side can “push on” ahead of the away trip to Scarlets in the European Champions Cup.

Returning from a long-term shoulder injury in Sale’s 30-3 away defeat to Bath, Haley made his first appearance since playing for the England Saxons on their summer tour of South Africa.

“It was great to get my first game time of the season. When you’re coming back from an injury the first game back is always nice,” he said.

“It didn’t really go to plan against Bath but for me it’s back to work now with training everyday and facing the consequences of bad performances.”

Haley, 22, started for the England Saxons in both of their victorious matches against South Africa A this summer. However just three minutes into the second match a dislocated shoulder ended Haley’s tour.

“I don’t think about the injury anymore,” he said. “It was special for me to pull on the white England shirt for the Saxons and now for Sale I want to draw on the experience of being around those England players and coaches and try and bring it to club performances.”

This weekend the Sharks travel to Wales for a European Champions Cup fixture against the Scarlets. Scarlets currently sit seventh in the Pro 12 but Haley warns there must be an improvement to the finer details of Sale’s game if they are to win in the first round of European matches this season.

“There are some minor details in the way we’re playing that is the difference between us scoring four or five tries or not scoring any at all.

“It’s all about the small details and making sure we’re running the game the best as we can.”

Sale achieved a sixth place finish in last season’s Aviva Premiership to ensure a place in the European Champions Cup – a feat that Haley and his side are proud of.

“It means a lot for us to be involved in the European competition. We worked very hard last season and it means everything to us now because it brings big crowds to the AJ Bell that make us want to do our best in the competition and push on.”
