Justin Rose has been named the Hilton European Tour Golfer of the Month for August following his historic Olympics victory in Rio, where he overcame Henrik Stenson in a titanic battle which captured the imagination of sports fans around the world.
Representing Great Britain, the 2013 US Open Champion went toe-to-toe with this year’s Open Champion Stenson at the Olympic Course and showed nerves of steel as he closed with a birdie in front of huge crowds to claim a two-shot triumph.
That earned Rose the gold medal in golf’s first appearance at the Olympics since 1904 and a ninth career European Tour victory.
The 36 year old has since made no secret of the significance of the Olympics success in the context of his career, and being awarded Hilton European Tour Golfer of the Month has provided the icing on the cake.
Having been voted the winner ahead of Belgium’s Thomas Pieters and Englishman Anthony Wall respectively, Rose will receive Diamond Elite status on Hilton HHonors, Hilton’s award-winning loyalty programme.
“I am delighted to be receiving this award on account of my victory in Rio,” said Rose. “It was an unbelievably special week, one that will live long in my memory.
“Being part of such an historic occasion was big enough for me but to go and win it, and take a gold medal home for Great Britain, was just incredible. Every honour that comes with being an Olympic champion just adds to it so to be named Hilton European Tour Golfer of the Month is another special privilege.”
Pieters, Rose’s Ryder Cup team-mate for next week’s showpiece at Hazeltine, finished in second place after his third career European Tour victory at the Made in Denmark, which went a long way in earning him a wild card pick for Darren Clarke’s European team.
Wall, meanwhile, finished in third place after he claimed his first title in 12 years at the Aberdeen Asset Management Paul Lawrie Match Play at Archerfield.
Neil McLeman, golf correspondent for the Daily Mirror: “While Thomas Pieters’ dramatic late surge into the Ryder Cup team was undeniably impressive, Justin Rose narrowly edged the vote after creating history in Rio.
“Some people may have questioned golf’s right to a place in the Olympics, but Justin banished those doubts with a performance which will live long in the memory.
“After being pushed all the way by Henrik Stenson in a thrilling battle on the final day, Justin deservedly added to Team GB’s golf medal haul – and you could see how much it meant to him. No matter how many more tournaments he wins, it will always be a career highlight for a class act and one of the nicest guys on the Tour.”
Honours Diamond Elite Status will provide Rose with a host of fantastic benefits at 4,600 hotels within the Hilton portfolio around the world, including complimentary access to Executive Floors, late checkouts, 48-hour room guarantees and, pending availability, complimentary room upgrades.
Hilton, the Official Hotel Supplier to The European Tour, is the Official Sponsor of the European Tour Golfer of the Month award, which recognises and rewards the best performances of European Tour members each month.
