London Welsh make five changes for Sunday’s Round 4 Greene King IPA Championship fixture against Cornish Pirates at Mennaye Field (KO 2pm).
From the side edged out 23-22 by Yorkshire Carnegie last weekend, into Welsh’s starting XV for the trip to Pirates come Darryl Marfo, Lovejoy Chawatama, Alex Woolford, Aaron Carpenter and Ryan Glynn.
In the backs, scrum half Ryan Glynn makes his first start of the new Championship season, with Rob Lewis moving to the bench.
In the forwards, there’s a double change in the front row with Darryl Marfo returning to the side and LoveJoy Chawatama set to make his first start for new club London Welsh since joining in the summer. James Hallam and Ben Cooper are named among the replacements.
Making his first league appearance of the season is Alex Woolford, who replaces the suspended Ben West in the second row, while former Pirate Aaron Carpenter is named at Number 8, in place of the injured Kieran Murphy. The Canada international makes his first Championship start for Welsh since making the switch from Mennaye Field to Old Deer Park.
On the bench, Miles Mantella returns having missed the game against Yorkshire Carnegie and flanker Jesse Liston is set to make his first Championship appearance of the new campaign.
The last meeting between the sides’ at Mennaye Field produced a thriller in April, as the Exiles snatched a 38-38 draw with the last play of the game thanks to Murphy’s try and Olly Barkley’s conversion. That was one of five meetings between the sides last season, with the Pirates coming out on top three:one in the head-to-head.
