Rugby: Peter Stringer “We’re Under No Illusions”

Sale scrum-half Peter Stringer expects a reaction from the Sharks squad when they play Worcester Warriors this Saturday.

“We were disappointed in our performance against Gloucester. We want to bounce back and will be going hard at it to get a result,” he said.

Stringer, 39, stressed the need to improve discipline after making his first appearance of the season in his side’s 26-13 home defeat to Gloucester.

“It was very tight when I came on and it was disappointing to concede a few penalties which stopped us getting back into the game but it was great to get out there and still feel good on the pitch.”

Last season Sale outscored Worcester four tries to three at the Sixways Stadium but couldn’t get the win in a match that ended 31-23 to the Warriors.

“They’re an improved side from last year because they have added to their squad and coaching staff. It’s a passionate crowd down there who love their rugby and they haven’t had a win yet in the Premiership so we’re expecting a tough game on Saturday – we’re under no illusions.”

With the addition of Mike Phillips to Steve Diamond’s squad this season, scrum-half is a position Sale have outstanding depth. Stringer, the 98-times capped Irishman, recognises the importance of a blend between experience and youth in improving performance and getting back to winning ways.

“Over the years for club, province and internationally I’ve competed against Mike but to have someone of his experience around is great – it’s fantastic – especially with the young lads like James Mitchell and Connor Dever coming through too,” he continued.
“Passing on experience comes in training days so when it comes to the game we can all get on with what we’ve learnt in the week. We have a young backline but a really talented backline who aren’t afraid to try things.

“It’s necessary to have a balance in the squad and I think we will only see more development and better results.”
