Queensland won the 2016 State of Origin after Dane Gugai almost single-handeadly won game 2, with a hat-trick of tries in their 26-16 victory over New South Wales at Suncorp Stadium.
Having won the first game at ANZ Stadium 6-4 three weeks ago, Queensland knew that victory in tonight’s game would win the series for the 10th time in eleven years, and twentieth all-time.
The sides traded penalties to start the game as tempers almost boiled over inside the first twenty minutes. Just after half an hour Gugai pounced on a fumbled offload to race away and score the game’s first try.
The winger scored his second try early in the second half, when he was put in the corner by Boyd. He completed his hat-trick just after the hour mark, when Thurston’s grubber-kick, on the last tackle, found him diving in the corner.
A couple of tries from Frizel and Maloney had given New South Wales some late momentum, but Corey Oates settled the game, and the series with a try in the left corner after more great work from Thorston.
