Slender Lead For Hungary

Hungary will take a 1-point lead into the 2nd leg of their Playoff round tie after a 26-25 victory over Serbia. With the winners advancing to next January’s World Championship finals in France we can expect a thrilling game in Veszprem next Wednesday.

Both sides are separated by only two spots in the World Rankings, with Hungary 9th while Serbia are 11th, so a close game was to be expected in Kraljevo.

The home side started very slowly, only scoring eight times in the first half, but rebounded strongly to just fail at the finish. Petar Nenadic scored 10 times for the Serbs.

Hungary, coached by Xavi Sabate, were 4-0 up after just six minutes and never relinquished that lead. Five goals apiece from both Ivancsik and Laszlo assisted by 12 saves from Mikler means that it’s all to play for next week.
